Keynote address by Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., to be simulcast in Goldstein Auditorium, shown campus wide via Orange Television Network, webcast live on Sept. 19September 13, 2007Jaime Winne Alvarezjlwinne@syr.edu

Wednesday, Sept. 19, will mark a momentous occasion for the Syracuse University community as students, faculty, alumni and friends come together to celebrate the dedication of Newhouse III, the third building of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts, Jr., will deliver a keynote address on the First Amendment at 2 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel. Seating in the chapel is by ticket only, and tickets are no longer available. Those who have tickets must be in their seats at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the event. The main chapel doors will be open at 1 p.m.

Overflow seating — which is open to the public and does not require tickets — will be available in Goldstein Auditorium in the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center. The speech will be simulcast in the auditorium and on campus television sets via the Orange Television Network (Channel 2). The speech will also be webcast live at http://newhouse.syr.edu/nh3.

Following the keynote, the campus community is invited to attend a dedication ceremony, at 3:30 p.m., at the University Place entrance to Newhouse III. Speakers will include Chief Justice Roberts; S.I. Newhouse, Jr., chairman of Advance Publications Inc.; SU Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor; David M. Rubin, dean of the Newhouse School; Newhouse Professor Jay Wright; and Newhouse student Stephanie Rivetz. In case of rain, the dedication ceremony will be held in the Newhouse III Atrium. An open house will follow the dedication.

Newhouse III, a $31.6 million, 74,000-square-foot addition to the Newhouse Communications Complex, was funded by a lead gift of $15 million — one of the largest private donations in Syracuse University history — by the S.I. Newhouse Foundation and the Newhouse family, and by donations from alumni and friends of the school. Designed by New York City-based Polshek Partnership Architects, the new building supports and continues the Newhouse School’s status as one of the top schools of communication in the country.

The visit by Chief Justice Roberts continues a tradition of historic visits to the Newhouse School, including the 1964 visit by President Lyndon B. Johnson, who dedicated Newhouse I, and the 1974 visit by CBS Chairman of the Board William S. Paley, who dedicated Newhouse II.

More information on Newhouse III is available at http://newhouse.syr.edu/nh3.
