Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts, Jr., to dedicate Newhouse III Sept. 19September 05, 2007Wendy S. Loughlinwsloughl@syr.edu

Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts, Jr., will visit the Syracuse University campus Sept. 19 to dedicate Newhouse III, the third building of SU’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

The Chief Justice will deliver a keynote address at 2 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel. Seating in Hendricks is limited and by ticket only. Tickets, which are free, will be available to the public starting Sept. 12 at the Schine Box Office, located in the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center, and are limited to two per person. Box office hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and noon-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The box office is closed Sunday. Ticket holders must be in their seats at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the event. Parking is available in all SU pay lots.

Overflow seating, which is open to the public and does not require tickets, will be available in Goldstein Auditorium in the Schine Student Center. The speech will also be simulcast on campus televisions and webcast at http://newhouse.syr.edu/nh3.

Following the keynote, a dedication ceremony will take place at 3:30 p.m. at the University Avenue entrance to Newhouse III. Speakers will include the Chief Justice; S.I. Newhouse, Jr., chairman of Advance Publications Inc.; SU Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor; David M. Rubin, dean of the Newhouse School; and a Newhouse School student and faculty member. The event is open to the public. In case of rain, the dedication ceremony will be held in the Newhouse III Atrium.

An open house will follow the dedication.

Newhouse III, a $31.6 million, 74,000-square-foot addition to the Newhouse Communications Complex, was funded by a lead gift of $15 million — one of the largest private donations in Syracuse University history — by the S.I. Newhouse Foundation and the Newhouse family, and by donations from alumni and friends of the school. Designed by New York City-based Polshek Partnership Architects, the new building supports and continues the Newhouse School’s status as one of the top schools of communication in the country.

The visit by Chief Justice Roberts continues a tradition of historic visits to the Newhouse School, including the 1964 visit by President Lyndon B. Johnson, who dedicated Newhouse I, and the 1974 visit by CBS Chairman of the Board William S. Paley, who dedicated Newhouse II.

More information on Newhouse III is available online at http://newhouse.syr.edu/nh3.
