Phi Beta Kappa to initiate new members

Phi Beta Kappa to initiate new membersMay 08, 2007SU News ServicesSUnews@syr.edu

Gary Radke, professor of fine arts in The College of Arts and Sciences, will address new members of Kappa of New York, SU’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter, during the group’s initiation ceremony Friday, May 11, at 3 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel.

Thirty-nine students in The College of Arts and Sciences will be inducted. The student speaker will be Rachel Marx, a senior majoring in political science and Spanish language, literature and culture.

Kappa of New York officers who will conduct the initiation ceremony include chapter president Eric Holzwarth, deputy director of the Renee Crown University Honors Program; vice president Wayne Franits, chair and professor of fine arts; chapter secretary Joe Shedd, associate professor of teaching and leadership; and chapter treasurer Kay Fiset, University College program director.

A reception for initiates and guests will follow in the Heroy Geology Laboratory lobby immediately after the ceremony.

Established in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the most prestigious academic honor society in the United States. Membership is based on academic achievement, intellectual breadth and good character. The SU chapter was founded in 1896.

Initiates elected in the 2006-07 academic year include:

Jacquelyn Ackeifi, Julie Adams, Marisa Bevilacqua, Amanda Blackley, Elizabeth Blair, Meredith Bowen, Gillian Cartwright, Sarah Christensen, Rebecca Coutant, Anne O’Donnell Dean, Melissa Emm, Roslyn Esperon, Jennifer Feden, Bridget Fitzgerald, Laura Furst, Aaron Gottlieb, Thomas Hackman and Erin Hendricks.

Also, Nicola Jones, Paul Khuri, Joshua Kohn, Catherine Lavelle, Rachel Marx, Sarah Mietz, Meaghan Monfort, Megan Moore, Marla Neto, Efstratios Phellas, Willa Plank, Brett Pugach, Lauren Rafferty, Rebecka Schaber, Jessica Schaeffer, Meigan Serle, Dianna Squillace-Manno, Emily Steakley, Shannon Sweeney, Kyle Townsend, Stephanie Voulgaris and Sarah Wraight.
