SU’s Newhouse, VPA kick off new Fashion and Beauty Communications program with fashion show April 04, 2007Wendy S. Loughlinwsloughl@syr.edu

Students from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) will present the fashion show “Making a Fashion Statement” Friday, April 13, at 7 p.m. in the Newhouse I Lobby. The show will serve as the kick-off event for the Fashion and Beauty Communications Milestone, a new concentration exploring fashion and beauty as communication that will begin in Fall 2007.

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Parking is available in the Waverly Lot, on the corner of Waverly and South Crouse avenues.

Course work in the concentration, which is drawn from both Newhouse and VPA, covers such topics as the history of fashion; contemporary fashion in popular culture; visual communications; fashion advertising and promotion; fashion photography; and beauty and fashion journalism. The milestone will also include a lecture series, benchmark trips, internships and study abroad opportunities.

“This milestone has been four years in the making, so it will be great to see it finally launched this fall,” says Carla Lloyd, Newhouse associate dean for creative and scholarly activity and one of the milestone’s founders. “I appreciate the enthusiastic response from students and am looking forward to serving them next year and in years to come.”

“Carla [Lloyd] and I had a `Eureka!’ moment four years ago when we sat next to one another at a conference and found we shared similar interests, but came to them from different disciplines,” says Karen Bakke, VPA associate professor of textile design and another founder of the milestone. “We vowed to work together and design a concentration so that the students in our respective areas could see the big picture and have access to all of the information that exists in so many forms on this campus. This wonderful new cross-disciplinary program is the result of that meeting and those four years of work, and it is such a pleasure to welcome our first class and bring Newhouse and VPA students together in this format.”

The Fashion and Beauty Communications Milestone is open to students in Newhouse or in VPA’s fashion design program. In addition to their chosen majors and minors, students who complete the program will receive a “milestone distinction” in fashion and beauty communications. About 40 students have already enrolled and will begin the program this fall.
