Books by School of Education faculty members among those featured at Women’s History Month book signing March 30March 23, 2007Patrick Farrellpmfarrel@syr.edu

Sari Biklen and Beth Ferri, both Syracuse University School of Education faculty members, will be on hand to autograph copies of their latest publications at the Women’s History Month book signing, to be held Friday, March 30, from 4-6 p.m. at the Chancellor’s Residence (corner of Comstock Avenue and Harrison Street).

The book signing and reception celebrates feminist scholarship at Syracuse University and includes works by more than a dozen women faculty members from a variety of disciplines. The event is open to the public.

Biklen’s book “A Practical Guide to the Qualitative Dissertation” was published recently by Teachers College Press. Co-authored with Ronnie Casella, the book is a how-to guide for writing successful qualitative dissertations and offers advice about and examples of the primary tasks and hidden complications in writing a qualitative dissertation. It takes readers through the long process of bringing a dissertation to completion, from the first formulation of the topic and selection of a committee to development of an argument and, finally, preparation for the defense.

Biklen is the Laura and Douglas Meredith Professor for Teaching Excellence and chairs the School of Education’s cultural foundations of education department.

Ferri, associate professor in teaching and leadership, cultural foundations of education and disability studies in the School of Education, recently published “Reading Resistance: Discourses of Exclusion in Desegregation and Inclusion Debates” (Peter Lang Publishing). In the book, Ferri and co-author David J. Connor trace the interconnected histories of race and disability in the public imagination through a nuanced analysis of editorial pages and other public discourses, including political cartoons and eugenics posters. Ferri coordinates the School of Education’s master’s program in secondary inclusive education and the doctoral program in special education, and serves on the advisory board for the women’s studies program, where she also is an affiliate faculty member.
