Whitman School receives blanket waiver from AST&LJanuary 31, 2007Amy Schmitzaemehrin@syr.edu

The Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University will soon be added to a list of only 23 schools in the United States to receive a blanket waiver for transportation and logistics certification from the American Society of Transportation & Logistics (AST&L). This certification will benefit students in Whitman’s supply chain management program by allowing those students who took the appropriate courses to graduate with automatic AST&L certification.

“We are very excited to have been awarded the blanket certification,” says Frances Gaither Tucker, chair of the Whitman marketing department and associate professor of marketing and supply chain management. “This will allow Whitman students to have another opportunity to graduate with higher credentials and demonstrated mastery of transportation and logistics. We are sure this certification, as well as the related certifications in the Association for Operations Management, will make our students even more distinctive in a competitive marketplace.”

AST&L was founded in 1946 by industry leaders with the goal of promoting continued education in the field of transportation and logistics. Students who are certified in Transportation and Logistics (CTL) display a strong knowledge in transportation, traffic, distribution and materials management. Through this new waiver, Whitman students will bypass a set of exams by enrolling in specific courses to receive CTL upon graduation.

The waiver will go into effect immediately, with students able to apply and begin scheduling the specific classes for next semester. Students must be a current member of the AST&L in order to become certified. If students are not yet a member, they must send in an application along with the CTL application. December graduates may also apply for the blanket waiver.

For more information on how to pursue this certification, contact Gary LaPoint, assistant professor of supply chain management in the Department of Marketing, at (315) 443-3331 or gelapoin@syr.edu.
