AirOrange moves to the SU QuadJuly 11, 2006Judy Holmesjlholmes@syr.edu

Stuck in an air-conditioned office when you would rather be out on the Syracuse University Quad enjoying the sights and sounds of our spectacular CNY summer? AirOrange on the Quad and a laptop or hand-held computer might be just the solution you’ve been waiting for. Students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors can now access the University’s wireless network from any place on the SU Quad — from the benches under the shade trees, the HBC patio, on the steps of Hendricks Chapel, in the Orange Grove, or smack dab in the center of the lawn.

AirOrange on the Quad is part of an ongoing effort by Information Technology and Services (ITS) to expand access to the wireless network in public, administrative, academic and residential spaces both on and off the SU campus. In addition, improvements in wireless technology are being added to the network to make it faster and more reliable for the University community.

“A growing number of students who choose to come to SU, arrive with expectations that wireless networking will be pervasive,” says Lee Badman, ITS analyst. “We are aggressively working with departments across campus to ensure that our wireless network expands rapidly and continues to evolve as improved wireless technologies emerge on the marketplace.”

In addition to the Quad, AirOrange is also being expanded to student rooms in Marion, Kimmel, Flint and Dellplain residence halls. During the fall semester, the wireless network will expand to student rooms in both Booth and Brewster residence halls. Last spring, AirOrange was added to the public spaces in the Marshall Square Mall and became available throughout the public, administrative, and academic spaces in The Warehouse in downtown Syracuse.
