The Syracuse University Department of Public Safety (DPS) held graduation ceremonies Friday, June 23, at 10 a.m. at Drumlins Country Club for officers completing its Campus Peace Officer training academy. The graduates will join the department’s active Peace Officers who have completed the conversion academy since March 2004, when the state granted greater law enforcement authority to the University.

Graduating from the academy are: Anthony Callisto of Solvay, DPS chief; Kevin Haley of Syracuse; Carl Hawley of Camillus; Kimberly Isaac of Hastings; Jonathan Lebaron of Solvay; James McLellan II of Liverpool; Kwamena Morris of Syracuse; Daniel Rubado of Syracuse; Keith Schauer of Liverpool; and Robert Sheehan of Liverpool.

The academy, a collaborative effort between the Syracuse Police Department and the DPS, challenges new and existing DPS employees to technical, physical, classroom and field-based tests. Following successful completion of the academy, graduates begin duty with the following new responsibilities:

  • the power of arrest based on probable cause;
  • the authority to enforce orders of protection in relationship violence cases;
  • the right to confiscate stolen property, illegal weapons and controlled substances;
  • the authorization to operate emergency equipment;
  • the authority to carry a weapon;
  • the ability to make traffic and suspicious vehicle stops;
  • access to state and federal records to facilitate first-response calls and investigations.

The University’s Department of Public Safety provides round-the-clock protection to the Syracuse University campus. Through various patrol and crime prevention efforts, the department of 82 employees partners with students, faculty and staff to identify, recognize and eliminate crime hazards and risks within the campus community.
