LGBT Resource Center to host SU alumni and community for Pride Weekend events in New York CityMay 25, 2006Matthew R. Snydermrsnyder@syr.edu

On June 24-25, during the culmination of New York City’s celebration of Pride Week, Syracuse University’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center will host a pair of events for SU alumni, students, faculty and staff.

“We are looking forward to connecting and re-connecting with our many friends in the New York area, celebrating the diversity of the LGBT community and sharing our scholarship and advocacy around LGBT issues with them,” says Adrea Jaehnig, LGBT Resource Center director. “This is an important historical moment to celebrate the creation of an LGBT Studies Program at Syracuse University and to continue conversations that will help make Pride Week a time for celebration, community and a meaningful exchange of knowledge.”

All events are free and open to all SU students, alumni, faculty and staff who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or straight allies. To RSVP, or for more information, call (315) 443-3983 or e-mail lgbt@syr.edu by June 16.

On June 24, from 2:30?4:30 p.m., the LGBT Resource Center will host the second annual SU LGBTA Alumni Pride Reception, held at SU’s Lubin House, 11 E. 61st St. between Madison and Fifth avenues. A discussion will include Jaehnig; Andrew London, co-chair of SU’s newly established LGBT Studies Program; and acclaimed scholar, author and activist Minnie Bruce Pratt, who will teach the introductory LGBT Studies course Sexualities, Genders and Bodies this fall.

On June 25, from 10-11 a.m., the LGBT Resource Center and its guests will participate in a free pride brunch at the New York University Office of LGBT Student Services, 60 Washington Square South, Suite 602. SU will also have a contingent marching in the 37th Annual New York City Pride March, in which guests are welcome to participate.

Pride Week events in the United States commemorate the Stonewall Riots of 1969 and seek to publicize the successes and struggles for equality by the LGBT community. For more information, visit http://lgbt.syr.edu/.
