Whitman School’s Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises program ranked among best in U.S.March 16, 2005Sara Millersemortim@syr.edu

The Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises Program (EEE) in Syracuse University’s Martin J. Whitman School of Management has again been recognized as one of the best in the country, according to Entrepreneur Magazine. The magazine’s 2005 “Top 100 Entrepreneurial Colleges” rankings, revealed in the April issue, place SU in the top tier, one of the 11 best in the Top 50 National Universities. Universities are unranked within the tiers.

This is the second year that Entrepreneur Magazine has recognized SU’s entrepreneurship program among the best in the nation, with SU among the top 13 in the 2004 rankings.

This national recognition comes on the heels of additional national accolades for the program. In 2004, the Falcone Entrepreneurship Center at Syracuse, as well as the Entrepreneurship Center at Stanford University, were honored with the 2004 NASDAQ Center of Entrepreneurial Excellence Award; and in January, the entrepreneurship program received one of the most coveted honors in the field of entrepreneurship education when it was named the National Model Undergraduate Program by the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

“Our faculty and students are proud of the amazing program that we have built at Syracuse, and this recognition suggests others are taking notice as well,” says Michael H. Morris, Witting Chair in Entrepreneurship and director of the EEE Program. While noting that there remains lots of room for continuous innovation in the program, Morris attributes the success to “an incredible level of support from alumni, faculty members, administrators and a community of entrepreneurs who give in so many ways.”

National universities ranked in “Entrepreneur Magazine’s” 2005 top tier are (alphabetically listed): University of Arizona; Babson College; Columbia University; DePaul University; University of Maryland; Massachusetts Institute of Technology; University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Pennsylvania State University; Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; University of South Carolina; and SU.

The rankings are based on more than 70 criteria, including course offerings (undergraduate and graduate), teaching and research faculty, business-community outreach, research centers and institutes, advisory boards, off-campus programs, entrepreneurial initiatives, degrees and certificates offered and faculty and alumni evaluations.

The Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, established in 1919, is one of the oldest business schools in the nation and was one of the first to be accredited. The beneficiary of a naming gift from legendary Wall Street financier Martin J. Whitman and his wife, Lois Whitman, in 2003, the School prepares graduates who combine an entrepreneurial mind-set and keen intellect with integrity and commitment to service.
