Syracuse University Art Collection presents film series on work of famed filmmaker Maysles ’49January 21, 2005Sara Millersemortim@syr.edu

The Syracuse University Art Collection is presenting an on-campus film series to celebrate the opening of New York City’s “The Gates, Central Park, New York, 1979-2005,” an installation by renowned artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The film screenings on the SU campus are a twin event to a similar series held at Lubin House in New York.

Beginning Jan. 31 and running through March 18, the series, “Maysles Films Christo and Jeanne-Claude,” will showcase five films by the Maysles brothers and a selection of photographs from Albert Maysles’ private collection. Screenings will take place in the Art Collection’s Sims Hall galleries and will be free and open to the public. Beginning with a different film each day, all five films will be shown consecutively starting at 12:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. The galleries are closed on weekends.

The screenings will present the films documenting Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s public art projects: “Christo’s Valley Curtain” (1974); “Running Fence” (1978); “Islands” (1986); “Christo in Paris (1990);” and “Umbrellas” (1995). Additionally, a trailer will be shown of the upcoming film, “The Gates,” a documentary begun in 1979 on the current New York installation by Albert Maysles and his late brother David Maysles.

Other exhibitions on view in the Art Collection’s Sims Hall galleries are: “The Artist Revealed: Artist Portraits and Self Portraits;” “Water and Light: James MacNeill Whistler’s etchings and drypoints of Venice and Amsterdam;” and “Todd Webb: Photographs of England and France 1948-75.” For more information, call (315) 443-4097.
