“It is a time when we must inspire our students to shine.” These are the words of Syracuse University Chancellor Nancy Cantor, from her message to the University’s faculty, students and staff announcing Syracuse Welcome 2004: A Slice of SU Life. The signature new student orientation program will take place Aug. 24-Sept. 12.
According to Mariana Lebron, director of the Office of Orientation and Transition Services, the second year of Syracuse Welcome will differ significantly from the first. “The biggest change is collaboration,” says Lebron. “Help and support are coming from many places on campus, from the Central New York community and from our many extended communities.” As an example of that support, Lebron highlights the Aug. 14 Orange Service Day in the Big Apple, led by the Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public and Community Service, in which 50 incoming first-year students were invited to New York City to work alongside SU faculty, staff and alumni on a park cleanup project.
In addition to familiar features such as the Taking Care of Business tent on the quad; parents’ receptions; Recreation Services activities; Goon Squad helpers at move-in; and events at Hendricks Chapel, the Division of International Programs Abroad, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center and other units, highlights include:
The Intellectual and Academic Life in Service of the Larger SocietyAug. 26, 2:30-4 p.m., multiple venues
Cantor, Dean David M. Rubin of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and Prof. Paula C. Johnson of the College of Law will speak to students and parents about their experiences in putting knowledge to work to improve lives and communities. Cantor will discuss her experiences with affirmative action; Johnson will speak about equal access to the law and justice; and Rubin will talk about how journalists affect the life of the nation.

The SU Experience BeginsAug. 26, 8:30 p.m. and 10:15 p.m.,

This event, required for all new students, will invite the audience to address the themes of Syracuse Welcome 2004: Explore, question, celebrate and imagine. After a welcome from student leaders, performances by student groups and a welcome from Lebron, featured speaker Teja Arboleda will use his humor and knowledge of current events to break down the barriers created by stereotypes and assumptions.
Chancellor’s Convocation for New Students and Lunch on the TurfAug. 27, 10:30 a.m., Carrier Dome
In her first Convocation as Chancellor, Cantor will welcome new students in the ceremonial opening of the academic year. All new SU and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry students and their families are welcome to attend this event, which includes the traditional academic procession and SU marching band, followed at 11:30 a.m. by lunch.

These mandatory events welcome new students to their colleges of enrollment, marking the beginning of academic advising and providing important information.
ORANGE You Glad We’re Talking? Aug. 27, 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., Goldstein Auditorium
New students are required to attend this event, in which Don McPherson, founder and executive director of Adelphi University’s Sports Leadership Institut and former SU football star, will initiate a dialogue about gender, relationships, communication and responsible sexuality.
From Home to the Dome: Orangefest 2004 Aug. 28, 6 p.m., Carrier Dome
This celebration of Orange pride will showcase SU’s spirit and tradition with food, music, videos and prizes highlighted by group cheers and activities for new students.
Classes begin on Aug. 30; a full schedule of Syracuse Welcome events and other resources for new students have been mailed to homes and are available at http://students.syr.edu/orientation/.
On Sept. 5, students will be welcome at Juice Jam, an all-day festival showcasing musical acts, carnival games and student organization activities. Other highlights include presentations on academic success, financial responsibility and campus security; the opening celebration of the
SUccess Series, a new SU program designed to enhance students’ study skills; and Slice of the ‘Cuse, in which campus departments, local businesses and nonprofit organizations will help students make successful transitions into the community.
“Syracuse Welcome will create a University-wide ambiance for new students with a diverse and meaningful menu of activities,” says Barry L. Wells, senior vice president and dean of student affairs. “We will welcome them warmly, and we will also challenge them academically and socially, engaging intellects and personalities. Their first weeks on campus will determine, in many ways, the course of their academic careers.”
