Pan Am 103 victims will be remembered during Dec. 21 serviceDecember 12, 2003Kelly Homan Rodoskikahoman@syr.edu

The chaplains of Syracuse University’s Hendricks Chapel will conduct a University Service of Remembrance on Sunday, Dec. 21, at 2:03 p.m. in the chapel’s Noble Room to honor those who died aboard Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on the same date 15 years ago.

Following the service in Hendricks Chapel, those in attendance will proceed to the Place of Remembrance, located in front of the Hall of Languages, where a brief memorial statement will be offered and the Crouse Chimes will sound 35 times in honor of the lost students.

The Rev. Christine Day, the University’s Episcopal chaplain, will lead the service. Also participating in the memorial service prayers and reflections will be the Rev. Kathryn Bell, Interdenominational Protestant chaplain; Father Timothy Mulligan, Catholic chaplain; and Michael McQuitty, Southern Baptist chaplain. Lockerbie Scholar Jamie Graham will play “Highland Cathedral” on the bagpipes as a prelude and will lead the processional playing “Amazing Grace.”

The Chaplains Council of Hendricks Chapel holds the memorial service each Dec. 21 at 2:03 p.m., the exact time and date of the crash of Pan Am Flight 103 in Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988. Thirty-five SU students returning from a semester of study abroad were lost on that flight.

SU will also have a presence at the Dec. 21 memorial service at Arlington National Cemetery. The Rev. Thomas V. Wolfe, dean of Hendricks Chapel; Judith O’Rourke, senior administrator in the Office of Undergraduate Studies; and Edward Galvin, director of the University Archives, will be in attendance.
