Three new exhibitions will open at Syracuse University’s Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery, located in the Shaffer Art Building, on Dec. 10 and run through Jan. 31, 2002. The exhibitions include:

• “Italy: In the Shadow of Time: Photographs by Linda Butler”;

• “Hollywood Icons and Local Demons,” sign-board paintings by Mark Anthony; and

• “Nude and Naked: Perceptions of the Female Body,” a class developed by students in the Graduate Program in Museum Studies in The College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Butler will present a lecture at 4 p.m. Jan. 24 in the Shaffer Art Building. A closing reception for all three exhibitions will follow from 6 to 8 p.m.

The “Italy” exhibition will feature 48 large-scale, black and white images that capture the spirit of Italy through landscapes, architecture and precious objects.

The signboard paintings in the “Hollywood” exhibition advertise concert parties or concert plays–theatrical or musical events performed in open air spaces–which take place during local festivals in Ghana.

The “Nude and Naked” exhibition features two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects from the University Art Collection by such well-known artists as Edward Hopper, Philip Pearlstein and Mel Ramos.

The gallery is open Tuesday and Thursday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.; and Wednesday, noon to 8 p.m. The gallery will be closed from Dec. 14 through Jan. 8, 2002.
