SU marks Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion’s first anniversaryOctober 12, 2001SU News ServicesSUnews@syr.edu

Syracuse University will celebrate the first anniversary of the Marilyn and William Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion with free skating and skate rentals, a hockey game, music and door prizes on Oct. 19 beginning at 5:30 p.m. The festivities are open to the University community.

The SU Women’s Ice Hockey Club will kick off the celebration as the club takes on the SUNY Cortland Hockey Club at 5:30 p.m. Other events include a brief ceremony at 8 p.m. that will feature presentations by Nick Wetter, manager of the Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion; Mitch Gartenberg, director of Recreation Services; and Barry L. Wells, senior vice president and dean of student affairs.

The sisters of Gamma Phi Beta will perform a song they composed in honor of the Tennitys, whose generous contribution made the ice skating pavilion a reality; and everyone who attends the event will be eligible for door prizes, one of which includes a zamboni ride.

Following the ceremony all are invited to skate with SU’s Men’s Hockey, Women’s Hockey and Figure Skating clubs.

The Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion opened during the Fall 2000 semester. Marilyn Tennity graduated from SU in 1942. She was active in the Sociology Club, the Red Cross and her sorority, Gamma Phi Beta. She met her first husband, the late Charles Swift ’42, while they were both students at SU. The couple raised four children and moved to Los Angeles during the 1950s.

After her first husband died, Marilyn married William Tennity, a Rochester-area native and retired mechanical engineer. The couple has family and friends in the Central New York Area, including Chancellor Kenneth Shaw and Mary Ann Shaw, associate of the Chancellor. The Tennitys are active in many civic and charitable projects in their California community.
