Celebrations, exhibitions, seminars and musical entertainment are on tap for Syracuse University alumni and guests during the 2001 Reunion Weekend June 1-3. Special recognition will be paid to the Classes of 1926, 1931, 1936, 1941, 1946, 1951, 1956 and 1961.  The Reunion Hospitality Center in the Goldstein Alumni and Faculty Center will be open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday to greet returning alumni and to help folks get reacquainted with each other and campus. The center will also be open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday.  Celebrating its Golden Anniversary is the Class of 1951, another of the “G.I. Bulge” classes of World War II veterans whose impact on the University has lasted for generations. The influx of veterans catapulted total enrollment from an average of 3,000 students in 1943 to an all-time high of 19,698 in 1948 and spurred the University to reach new levels of excellence in teaching and research. The Class of 1951 will host a Golden Anniversary Dinner celebration at 6 p.m. Friday at Drumlins Country Club.  Other Friday highlights include the presentation of the 2001 Melvin A. Eggers Senior Alumni Awards during the annual Half-Century Dinner beginning at 6 p.m. in the Schine Student Center’s Goldstein Auditorium. Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw will present the awards to Miriam Decker Alsever ’37, Yvonne Miller Phillips ’41 and George Stafford ’48. The awards are presented to those who graduated more than 50 years ago and have demonstrated loyalty and service to the University.  Alumni are also invited to attend Dean’s Open Houses from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday in The College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, the College for Human Development, the School of Information Studies, the School of Management, the Maxwell School, the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, the School of Social Work and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. The deans and staff members will be on hand to greet alumni and update them about new and established programs.  One stop alumni should be sure to make on Friday is at the newly renovated Robert B. Menschel Media Center. Located on the Waverly Avenue side of Watson Hall, the center will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On exhibit in the facility’s new main gallery are selections from the Light Work Collection. The renovation doubled the space of Light Work, an internationally known, artist-run photography organization, and its sister organization, Community Darkrooms. The new facility also features state-of-the-art photography and computer equipment; expanded darkrooms, collection storage and exhibition preparation areas; a renovated Watson Auditorium; and renovated facilities for student-run radio station WJPZ and television station UUTV.  On Saturday, George Arents Pioneer Medals will be presented to four outstanding alumni during the gala annual dinner and dance beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the OnCenter in downtown Syracuse. Shuttle service to the OnCenter will be available from Shaw Hall and the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center. Parking is also available in the OnCenter parking garage. This year’s recipients are Lansing G. Baker G’64, Ph.D ’72, Walter D. Broadnax Ph.D ’75, Bob Costas ’74 and Elsa Reichmanis ’72, Ph.D. ’75.  Other Saturday highlights:  ? Twelve outstanding alumni will be honored by various SU schools and colleges during the annual Deans’ Breakfasts, which begin at 8:30 a.m.  ? The first Maxwell “Re: Union Convocation”–with Dean John L. Palmer and 2001 Arents Award recipient Broadnax–will be held at 9:30 a.m. in Maxwell Auditorium and will feature an open discussion of issues of citizenship, community and public service.  ? The University’s newly formed College of Human Services and Health Professions will host a Reunion Forum at 10 a.m. in Huntington Beard Crouse Hall’s Kittredge Auditorium. Alumni will have an opportunity to learn about the history of the merger and hopes for this new college, which will include programs in social work, nursing, child and family studies, marriage and family therapy, and nutrition and hospitality management. ? Reunion College offerings include “Change: Opportunities and Omens” at 10 a.m. in The Underground of the Schine Student Center (offered by The College of Arts and Sciences); “Constructive Approaches to Violence Prevention in Today’s Schools” at 10 a.m. in Huntington Hall’s Ganders Lounge (offered by the School of Education); and “Biomaterials Science at SU”at 11 a.m. in Room 369 of Link Hall (offered by the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science) and “Marketing and the Internet” at 10 a.m. in Room 120 of the Crouse-Hinds School of Management Building (offered by the School of Management). ? The recipients of scholarships from the new Jeffrey Katzer Doctoral Student Endowment and the Ronnie Kasowitz Memorial Scholarship Endowment will be announced during the School of Information Studies Award Ceremony at 10 a.m. in the Room 4-212 of the Center for Science and Technology. ? The University of Toronto MacMillan Singers will perform two free concerts: at 3 p.m. in the Goldstein Alumni and Faculty Center and at 8 p.m. in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium in Crouse College. The concerts are part of the chamber choir’s Lake Ontario Tour, which also includes stops in Buffalo, Kingston and Amherst Island.
