Thousands of elementary and middle school students will visit the Carrier Dome for the women’s basketball game on Wednesday, Dec. 7.
Thousands of local elementary and middle school students are in for quite a field trip Wednesday, Dec. 7, as they take part in a day filled with education and entertainment. The School Day event is a first for the Syracuse University Athletics Department.
“We began planning last May,” says Marketing and Sponsorship Coordinator Jennifer Falco. “We have over 3,000 students and chaperones that will be at the Carrier Dome, taking part in educational activities that include messages of health, wellness and anti-bullying, and attending the women’s basketball game.” The Orange will face Coppin State at 11 a.m.
School Day is an event held at other Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) schools. “Virginia had over 7,000 last year and the ACC women’s basketball tournament hosts a school day on their first day of tournament play as well,” according to Falco.
Students in grades 2-8 will be at the Dome, and that means members of the campus community can expect to see plenty of school buses around the Dome on Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. That means motorists around campus should be extra mindful of buses discharging students in the morning and picking them back up in the afternoon.
“The goal was to pack the Dome,” says Falco, “and make it both entertaining and educational for the students.”
