Graduate Mentoring Symposium Oct. 31

Thursday, October 27, 2016, By News Staff

This Halloween, the Graduate School takes the terror out of developing and sustaining great mentoring relationships with a half-day, GSO-funded Graduate Mentoring Symposium in Schine 304.

The program features concurrent session threads tailored respectively to grad students (how to get the mentoring you need; peer mentoring programs), faculty (how to be an effective mentor; mentoring for non-academic jobs), and department/program administrators (promoting a culture of mentoring; facilitating mentoring networks) from 1 to 3:45 p.m.

Jan Allen, Beth Boehm and Paula Chambers

A plenary session on “Graduate Mentoring: Departures and Approaches” follows at 4 p.m., featuring Jan Allen, associate dean for academic and student affairs, Cornell University; Versatile PhD founder Paula Chambers; and Beth Boehm, dean of interdisciplinary and graduate studies and vice provost for graduate affairs, University of Louisville. All three are contributors to the recent Graduate School Press publication, The Mentoring Continuum: From Graduate School through Tenure. Concluding the program is a reception and book launch starting at 5:30 p.m.

Studies and surveys consistently reveal quality of mentoring to be the single most important factor contributing to student success, both in their programs and in subsequent job placement. Whether you are a grad student, a faculty mentor, or a graduate program administrator, this program will inform you on best practices, emerging trends and ideas, and opportunities to forge and strengthen mentoring relationships.
