Syracuse University thought leaders, events and research news were showcased in the following news outlets this week:

  • Matthew Huber, professor of geography and the environment in the Maxwell School, was quoted in the Yahoo story “Is the biggest US public utility finally catching up on clean energy?“
  • Richard Barton, assistant teaching professor in the Maxwell School, was published in The Fulcrum: “No election system is an island: Why more states must eliminate partisan primaries”
  • David Larsen, associate professor of public health in Falk College, was interviewed for the Newsday article “New York watching for COVID variant appearing in other states that’s ‘highly divergent’ from prior strains.” He was also quoted in a second Newsday story “BA.2.86 COVID variant detected in NYC sewer, health commissioner says.”
  • Margaret Talev, professor of practice in the Newhouse School and director of the Syracuse University Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship, was interviewed by the NPR show “Up To Date” for the piece “Americans are as divided as ever. What does that mean for our democracy and the media?” She also spoke with Spectrum News for the story “Advocates push for Trump trials to be televised.”
  • Scott Lathrop, professor of marketing practice in the Whitman School, was quoted in WalletHub: “Who Has the Cheapest Auto Insurance Quotes in New York?”
  • Katherine Macfarlane, incoming director of the Disability Law and Policy Program and associate professor in the College of Law, was quoted in the New York Post story “NYC man faces fines and has car auctioned off — despite having a disabled permit.”
  • Bill Werde, director of the Bandier Program at the Newhouse School, was quoted in the Vanity Fair article “Elite Music Tourism Is the Latest 1 Percent Flex” and the Los Angeles Time article “How Taylor Swift took over L.A. and the world.”
  • Robert Thompson, Trustee Professor of television, radio and film and director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the Newhouse School, quoted about the death of Bob Barker in USA Today, NBC News, Economic Times  and the Washington Post.
  • Corri Zoli, director of research and associate teaching professor, was quoted in the Newsweek piece “Donald Trump’s Plan to End Ukraine War Dismissed by Military Analysts.”
  • Brian Taylor, professor of political science in the Maxwell School, was quoted in the International Business Times article “Not End Of Story: Some Russia Watchers Skeptical After Putin Comments On Prigozhin Plane Crash.”
  • Rick Welsh, professor of food studies in Falk College, wrote an op-ed in Albany Times Union “Commentary: A way to make agriculture work better for farmers and farmworkers”
  • Heath Hanlin, associate professor in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, was quoted in the Lifewire story “Why a New Court Ruling Against AI Is a Victory for Human Artists.”
  • Sean McFate, adjunct professor in the Maxwell School in Washington D.C., was quoted in the USA Today story “‘Zelenskyy is in a box’: Some experts say Ukraine won’t win the war: Updates.“
  • David Driesen, professor of law in the College of Law, was quoted in The Hill article “Climate activists look forward after Montana court win.”
