Syracuse University Chancellor and President Kent Syverud has added an important, new leadership role to his portfolio. He has been elected as a commissioner of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Chancellor Syverud’s three-year term will begin Jan. 1.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to partner with colleagues across the higher education landscape in this new role,” says Chancellor Syverud. “The Middle States Commission on Higher Education does important work to ensure institutions of higher education are delivering a high-quality academic experience.”
The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. MSCHE accredits institutions of higher education in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and other locations abroad.
The work of the MSCHE and its commissioners is to assure students and the public of the quality of higher education. Through its accreditation process, the commission reviews an institution’s accountability, self-appraisal, improvement and innovation through peer review and application of its standards.
The commission is made up of 26 volunteer members who are elected by the colleges and universities accredited by the commission. They are responsible for making decisions on the accreditation of the institutions of higher education and forming commission policies. The commission is currently planning for improvements to its accreditation processes.
