Statement from Provost Gretchen Ritter, Chief Student Experience Officer Allen Groves and DPS Chief Craig Stone

Yesterday afternoon, a poster with troubling imagery and threatening language, was discovered on a wall in the Nancy Cantor Warehouse. After a quick response and investigation by the Department of Public Safety, Syracuse Police Department and the FBI, it was determined that the poster was submitted as part of a class project in the College of Visual and Performing Arts and was subsequently placed by the student on a wall near a public elevator, which was not a part of the assignment.

While the poster alarmed the members of our community who saw it, based on the investigation and evaluation by the Threat Assessment Team, we can assure you there was never an actual threat of physical violence. The responsible student has been referred to the Office of Community Standards.

We appreciate the vigilance of our community members who spotted this sign and took quick action to notify the proper authorities. As a community, we must continue to speak up when we encounter things that give us concern for the safety of our community. Please never hesitate to bring a concerning matter to the attention of the Department of Public Safety, your school/college leadership, your professor or a classmate.
