New Graduate Students Invited to Welcome Event, Picnic and Involvement Fair on Saturday, Aug. 27

A first-of-its-kind welcome event, information session, picnic and involvement fair for new graduate students will be held Saturday, Aug. 27.

The welcome event and information session will be held at 2 p.m. in Goldstein Auditorium, Schine Student Center. The event will feature welcome remarks from Vice Chancellor, Provost and Chief Academic Officer Gretchen Ritter and Graduate School Dean Peter Vanable. Glenn Wright, director of Graduate School programs, will serve as host for the information session.

Other University community members will discuss graduate student resources, including Dean of Libraries David Seaman; Dan Olson-Bang, director of professional and career development; and Ben Erwin, Writing Center administrator.

There will also be two sessions on ways to thrive as a graduate student on campus and in the Syracuse community. The session presenters are Cory Wallack, executive director, Barnes Center at The Arch; Carrie Brown, director of counseling; Tyrone Reese, associate director of SOAR; and Robert Searing, curator of history, Onondaga Historical Association.

A graduate student panel with students Yousr Dhaouadi, Chelsea Bouldin and Salvatore Zarrella will also be held.

At 4 p.m., immediately following the welcome and information session, new graduate students are invited to attend a picnic on the Kenneth A. Shaw Quadrangle (the Quad). There will be free food and refreshments, and music to enjoy.

The picnic will also feature an engagement and involvement fair in which graduate students representing student groups and staff from University offices will discuss ways students can be supported and become involved in campus and community activities.

Parking for the event is available at University Avenue Garage (UAG), the open lots across from the UAG Garage and the Comstock Avenue Garage.
