Syracuse University Issues Interim Suspension to Psi Upsilon, Investigation Underway

Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2024

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

I am writing today as a follow-up to the message you received from Chancellor Kent Syverud on Oct. 16. Since then, allegations of hazing have been made against a second fraternity. These allegations include reported conduct that may have placed students at risk, and which as the Chancellor previously stated may be both a serious violation of University policies and of New York State law.

After reviewing the reports and evidence provided to the University, an interim suspension has been issued to Psi Upsilon fraternity today, which includes a directive to cease all activities pending the completion of our investigation. The reported behavior is degrading and has no place on our campus. Any organization or individual who is ultimately found to have violated our policies will be held appropriately accountable.

Syracuse University has long valued the role of Greek life in our community when its conduct follows these organizations’ stated values and our expectations of student groups. It is unfortunate that the actions depicted in these two cases undermine the positive contributions of our campus’ fraternity and sorority organizations.

Community Standards and the Department of Public Safety (DPS) are collaborating on both active investigations. The University also continues to liaise with the Syracuse Police Department to assess whether any crimes were committed under New York State law. Any additional action taken with respect to either fraternity will be documented on the Fraternity and Sorority Affairs website. Due to federal privacy law, the University cannot and will not disclose any disciplinary action taken against individual students.

If you or anyone you know has been impacted by acts of hazing, please know that resources are available to you. Additionally, if you have any information to contribute to these investigations, you can contact Community Standards or DPS. Any information provided will be kept confidential.

Sincerely,

Allen Groves
Senior Vice President and Chief Student Experience Officer
