Leadership Transition Update

The message below was sent by Chancellor Kent Syverud to Syracuse University students, faculty and staff on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

Dear Orange Students, Faculty and Staff:

As you know, I had intended to serve as Chancellor through June 30. With the Board’s appointment of my successor and Chancellor-elect J. Michael Haynie already here and deeply engaged with our community, we are well positioned to move that timeline forward. I will remain Chancellor through Sunday, May 10, which coincides with Commencement. Chancellor-elect Haynie will assume his new role the following day, Monday, May 11. This is a natural and fitting moment for this transition. Over the next six weeks, I will work closely with Chancellor-elect Haynie to ensure a seamless transition and handover of responsibilities.

I am deeply grateful for the many well wishes I have received as my time at Syracuse draws to a close. I am proud of all that we have accomplished together, and we still have more to do in the coming weeks. I leave knowing this community is in exceptionally capable hands, and I look forward to all that Syracuse University will continue to achieve under Chancellor Haynie’s leadership.

Forever Orange,

Chancellor Kent Syverud
