J. Michael Haynie

J. Michael Haynie, vice chancellor for strategic initiatives and innovation and the Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship, has been named a University Professor by Vice Chancellor and Provost Michele Wheatly. The distinction—a four-year, renewable appointment—is granted to faculty who excel in their fields and have made extraordinary scholarly contributions nationally and internationally. The Board of Trustees Executive Committee approved this appointment at its recent meeting.

Haynie is the founding executive director of Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF). The IVMF is widely acknowledged as higher education’s most known and respected center of thought leadership related to the social, economic and wellness concerns of the nation’s veterans and families. As the Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship, Haynie also leads the University’s portfolio of entrepreneurship and cross-campus innovation programs, as well as the Office of Veteran and Military Affairs, the Office of Government and Community Engagement and University College—Syracuse University’s point of entry for nontraditional and continuing education students.

“I join the Provost and our community in congratulating Mike on this appointment. His entrepreneurial expertise is routinely leveraged by stakeholders at the highest levels of government, private enterprise and nonprofit organizations, and his scholarship is widely published in the leading academic journals in his field,” says Chancellor Kent Syverud. “His passion for innovation and service has positively impacted the lives of the more than 100,000 veterans and military-connected families served by IVMF programs around the world, and his leadership continues to enrich and enhance our campus community.”

Provost Wheatly notes that Haynie’s entrepreneurial approach to his academic work has set the conditions for his impactful contributions to research, policy and practice.

“This is an incredibly well-deserved honor,” says Wheatly. “Mike’s passion for bringing an innovation lens to addressing the issues and concerns facing the nation’s veterans has had a profound impact on both public policy and on countless veterans and military-connected families. I am pleased he will play another distinguished role in support of our academic community and advancing scholarly understanding and research in his field.”

Haynie earned a doctorate in entrepreneurship and business strategy at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His academic research is focused on decision-making, cognition and identity, and has been published in many of the world’s leading entrepreneurship and business strategy journals. Haynie currently serves on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Business Venturing, the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and the Journal of Management Studies. He also serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Military, Veteran and Family Health. Before beginning his academic career, Haynie served for 14 years as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.

“It is a privilege to be recognized among such a prestigious group of well-respected leaders and scholars,” Haynie says. “I have been honored to be part of this great university for the past decade and remain committed to supporting our shared academic aspirations. I look forward to continued service to the University community.”

Shortly after arriving at Syracuse University in 2006, Haynie created the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities program at the Whitman School of Management. Haynie founded the IVMF in 2011 as the nation’s first, interdisciplinary academic institute focused purposefully on informing and impacting the policy, economic, wellness and social concerns of the nation’s veterans and their families. Today, the IVMF’s educational programs directly impact more than 25,000 veterans and family members each year.

Haynie is frequently asked to testify before Congress on issues related to small business, innovation and veterans. In 2013, Haynie was appointed by the Obama Administration to serve as the chairman of the U.S. Secretary of Labor’s Advisory Committee on Veterans’ Employment and Training. In 2015, U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Bob McDonald appointed Haynie to serve as the vice chairman of a newly created Presidential Task Force, chartered to set the course for long-term excellence and reform at the Department of Veterans Affairs. In addition, Haynie also serves on the Scientific Advisory Board for the Naval Health Research Center’s “Millennium Cohort Research Study,” on the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Veterans Coming Home project and as a member of the CNBC Disruptor-50 Council, a select group of entrepreneurship influencers and thought leaders who each year select the 50 most innovative new businesses in America.
