A Message From Board Chairman Jeff Scruggs

The message below was sent by Jeff Scruggs, chairman of the Board of Trustees, to Syracuse University students, faculty and staff on Monday, Jan. 12, 2026.

Dear Members of the Syracuse University Community:

Today, Chancellor Kent Syverud shared with you his appointment as the next president of the University of Michigan. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to express our deepest congratulations and gratitude to Chancellor Syverud and Dr. Ruth Chen as they prepare to return to their alma mater. We are immensely proud that one of the nation’s most prestigious universities has selected our chancellor for this role. His extraordinary work at Syracuse University has clearly demonstrated the visionary leadership that will serve the University of Michigan well.

The search for Syracuse University’s next chancellor continues to make excellent progress. We have attracted outstanding candidates who are drawn to Syracuse’s momentum and bright future. The search is on schedule, and we look forward to introducing our next leader this spring. Chancellor Syverud’s appointment to Michigan is a testament to Syracuse’s strength and the caliber of leadership our university cultivates.

We deeply appreciate Chancellor Syverud’s commitment to remain with us through June 2026 as originally planned. This ensures we maintain our momentum and complete a thoughtful transition to new leadership. We know he will continue advancing our priorities with relentless energy and dedication during these remaining months.
