Staff Mentoring Program: Accepting Applications and Nominations

The Office of People and Culture, in collaboration with Human Resources, is currently recruiting the fourth cohort of the Staff Mentoring Program. This initiative connects early-career staff with mid- to senior-level campus leaders, as mentees and mentors, respectively. The program supports mentees in career development through mentorship, networking and educational opportunities.

Active, full-time staff members are encouraged to apply. Campus members are invited to nominate staff members as mentors or mentees.

  • What are the eligibility requirements for a mentor?
    A successful mentor candidate will:

    • Be an active, full-time staff member with the title of associate director (or equivalent responsibilities) or above,
    • Have at least seven years of professional experience,
    • Have at least one year of combined, full-time, active Syracuse University work history
    • And be in good standing, as confirmed by Human Resources.
  • What are the eligibility requirements for a mentee?
    A successful mentee candidate will:
    • Be an active, full-time staff member of Syracuse University,
    • Have up to seven years of full-time, higher education professional experience,
    • Not be involved in or participating in a formal mentorship program within Syracuse University
    • And be in good standing, as confirmed by Human Resources
  • What is the time commitment for the program?

Mentors and mentees are expected to attend an orientation, a welcome and closing reception, quarterly social outings and meet once a month for approximately an hour. There is additional programming offered for mentors and mentees that is optional (e.g., exchange labs, office hours, etc.).

  • What is the application and selection process?

Staff members will submit an application which will be reviewed by a committee. Mentors and mentees will be selected to advance based on experience, their short answer responses and potential matching.

  • Do I get to choose my mentor/mentee?

Candidates who advance will have an opportunity to rank their preferred match. While we cannot guarantee a top-choice match, the committee carefully considers rankings and applications to support the best possible match.

  • What can I expect as a mentor or mentee?

Mentors will have the opportunity to shape and inspire future leaders at Syracuse University, receive support from the Office of People and Culture with their mentee and play a critical role in supporting employee engagement and retention.

Mentees will have an opportunity to grow leadership skills, connect with University leaders, receive personalized guidance and coaching and build their network within Syracuse University.
