February is Black History Month (BHM), and the campus community is invited to celebrate Black history, culture and traditions through a series of programs and events coordinated by BIPOC Student Success and the Black History Month Planning Committee, as well as student organizations and campus partners. This year’s BHM theme is “African Americans and Labor,” underscoring the pivotal role and hard work African Americans put in to shaping our country’s history. It also emphasizes the importance of self-help strategies and entrepreneurship in Black communities. Explore the full calendar of events, and read on for some highlights of the month!
Black History Month Information Fair and Kickoff
Join the Black History Month Committee and Student Association on Friday, Jan. 31, for a deep dive into the vibrant cultures and rich traditions of the Black diaspora right here at Syracuse University! Get ready for tablings of Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs), special performances and more! Catch the BHM Information Fair from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Schine Student Center Atrium, then swing by the BHM Kickoff from 7-9 p.m. in Goldstein Auditorium.
Hair Me Out
Hair Me Out is a vibrant celebration of Black-owned businesses and local vendors, showcasing a diverse array of offerings—from food and fashion to beauty and haircare. Event attendees can explore unique products and services, including handmade clothing, delicious cuisine and top-notch beauty treatments. It’s more than just shopping—it’s about supporting small Black-owned businesses, providing them a platform to shine and fostering connections within the Syracuse community. You can check out Hair Me Out on Monday, Feb. 3, from noon-2 p.m. in The Underground in Schine.
Basketball Classic
Black culture continues to challenge the way society views athletes, the value of their opinions and the consistency of their actions. It has particularly challenged the United States to progress culturally, politically and socially. Join the Black History Month Committee and the Barnes Center at The Arch on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 8:30 p.m. for an exciting Basketball Classic to honor and celebrate the impact Black culture has had on sports and our culture as a whole. This event will allow Syracuse University’s student leaders, faculty and staff to engage in a competitive game while building relationships across campus!
CuseCon
CuseCon is a groundbreaking event created to celebrate, inspire and empower student creators, entrepreneurs and influencers.
