This year’s Career Week, hosted by Career Services, takes place Sept. 25-29, with the highlight being the Career and Internship Fair on Sept. 26 from 3-7 p.m. in the JMA Wireless Dome. The Career and Internship Fair will feature over 200 employers and provides an opportunity for students of all majors and years to speak with recruiters. This can lead to internships, jobs, networking and professional development opportunities. Make sure to register today on Handshake!
Perks of Career Week
Not only will you be able to meet potential employers, but you’ll also get the opportunity to see what’s out there! The job market is huge, and it’s only growing with developing technology. If you aren’t sure what you want to do, then this is a way to get started! These employers have plenty of insight on various fields and all the job opportunities you may be able to explore in them. The Career and Internship Fair is also a great opportunity to practice networking and gain connections in various fields.
Career Week can give you lots of training for entering the working world. Career Services offers training and career appointments in order to continue this training and further prepare you for the professional world.
5 Tips to Prepare for the Fair
1. Have Something to Give to Employers
Bring a printed resume or business card in case an employer asks for one. If you need help polishing your resume, stop by Career Services for a resume touch-up! You can also put your resume through VMock and get feedback from the website.
2. Have QR Codes for Your Handshake and LinkedIn Accounts
Having the QR codes for both your LinkedIn and Handshake accounts downloaded and easily accessible will allow employers to check out your profile and contact you quickly in the future.
3. Update Your Handshake Account and Download the Handshake App
Ensuring your Handshake account is up to date will allow employers to see all of your interests and your work and education experiences, which may make them more inclined to reach out! Additionally, each employer will have a Handshake QR code so you can see their page as well, so be sure to have the Handshake app handy to easily explore their pages.
4. View Employers’ Handshake Pages Before the Fair
Researching the attending employers will allow you to better understand their companies and gives you something to talk about with their representatives!
5. Prep with Career Services
In preparation for the Fair, Career Services is offering many services to help students get ready, including drop-ins, personal appointments and a special Identity and Culture in the Workspace panel. Drop-ins allow for students to get their resumes polished and their career questions answered. Personal appointments give students a specific time to get their questions answered about career paths, mock interviews, and job and internship searches. Identity and Culture in the Workspace, taking place a few hours before the Career and Internship Fair, will allow students to gain a better perspective on the workplace and the value workers have within it. There will also be a networking opportunity afterward!
