October marks multiple awareness months all over the globe. Here on campus, we host awareness months events and activities for LGBTQ+ History Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Disability Awareness Month. You can check out the University Events Calendar to stay up-to-date on all the activities, but here are just a few to get started:
LGBTQ+ History Month and 20th Anniversary Kickoff Celebration
Not only is the LGBTQ Resource Center hosting a calendar of events for LGBTQ+ History Month, it’s also the 20th anniversary of the center! Check out the kickoff celebration on Friday, Oct. 1, 6-7:30 p.m. in Schine 304.
Access Mentoring Program
All disabled undergraduate students are welcomed to join the Disability Cultural Center’s Access Mentoring Program. The program connects disabled students with disabled peer and staff mentors. In addition to having a person to chat about acclimating to campus, group discussions are held every Monday to connect with even more disabled campus members. Interested students should email Jennith Lucas at jelucas@syr.edu or Kate Jean Corbett Pollack at kjpollac@syr.edu.
Queer and Trans Solidarity List
Each year, the LGBTQ Resource Center invites students, faculty and staff to sign on to the Queer and Trans Solidarity List, pledging to support those who identify within lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex and asexual (LGBTQIA+) communities at Syracuse University and SUNY ESF. The deadline to take the pledge and add your name to the list is Tuesday, Oct. 5.
Tie-Dye and Chalk the Quad
Join the LGBTQ Resource Center and Pride Union to tie-dye some t-shirts and chalk the Quad on Sunday, Oct. 10.
Wellness Leadership Institute
As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Wellness Leadership Institute is offering two workshops, one focused on Title IX and another focused on supporting a friend impacted by sexual or relationship violence.
National Wear Purple Day
On Thursday, Oct. 21, communities will wear purple to show solidarity with those impacted by interpersonal violence. Wear purple and tag @BeWellSU and #SUGoesPurple on social media to show your support and how you will work to end interpersonal violence.
And don’t forget, Latinx Hispanic Heritage Month continues to Oct. 15. The LGBTQ+ Resource Center and Multicultural Affairs will host a joint event featuring poets Ariana Brown and Alan Pelaez Lopez for the Latinx Hispanic Heritage Month and Third Annual LGBTQ+ History Month Potash Keynote on Thursday, Oct. 14.
