Syracuse University’s Senior Class Marshal applications are open! This opportunity is open to all rising seniors (regardless of prior leadership experience!) who are enrolled in undergraduate programs and who will be on campus during the entirety of their senior year. If you’re weighing whether you should throw your hat in the ring for the role, here are five reasons to convince you to apply!
1. It’s a Respected Leadership Role
Serving as a Senior Class Marshal is one of the highest honors a student at Syracuse University can achieve. In this role, Marshals are distinguished as models of the University’s values, exemplifying academic excellence, community engagement and leadership. Being chosen as a Marshal allows you to represent your graduating class and be an ambassador for their spirit and unity during important events in your senior year, including graduation.
2. Help Shape the Commencement Experience for Your Class
One of the most extraordinary parts about being a Senior Class Marshal is that you have the unique opportunity to help select the Commencement speaker for your graduating class! This allows you to contribute towards and be featured in one of (if not the most) important events during a student’s time at university, resonating with friends and family alike. This responsibility ensures that your voice aids in creating a memorable, inspiring conclusion to your time at Syracuse, establishing a sense of pride and accomplishment in yourself and your classmates.
3. Advocate for Your Fellow Students
The role of Senior Class Marshal gives you a platform on which to share your own perspectives and experiences as a Syracuse student with a senior University official. In doing so, you will have the chance to discuss your Syracuse journey, offer constructive feedback and propose ideas to improve the student experience for future generations. This influence allows you to leave a lasting legacy at the University and contribute to meaningful change!
4. Participate in Exclusive Networking Opportunities
Senior Class Marshals are offered opportunities and strongly encouraged to engage in activities and events with the Office of Alumni Engagement, the Student Experience Division and the Office of Special Events. This means you’d have opportunities to network and engage with alumni, current University staff, student organizations, and even high-ranking University officials like the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Provost and others. By fostering strong relationships with student organizations and key stakeholders on campus, you will be able to form and maintain connections that provide mentorship and career guidance even beyond graduation!
5. It’s a Recognition of Excellence
Being selected as a Marshal is a testament to your hardwork, resilience and determination. The selection process evaluates your academic achievements, contributions to RSOs on campus and community service. This position is a hallmark of distinction, setting you apart as a leader. It’s a significant accomplishment that will enhance your resume and make you stand out to employers, graduate schools and professional networks.
By applying to be a Senior Class Marshal, you’re not just stepping into a role—you are seizing an opportunity to lead, inspire and make a lasting difference for yourself, your classmates and Syracuse University! Applications are due Monday, Feb. 10, 2025.
