As Syracuse University students, it’s incredibly important to give back to the community and serve it the best we can. It can sometimes be difficult to see outside our campus bubble, but we must still be mindful of the world outside the University. If you have some time to spare, consider spending it volunteering at one of these amazing organizations to show gratitude for the city we live in!
The Samaritan Center
The Samaritan Center is a nonprofit organization run by members of the Syracuse community. They provide hot meals every day of the year for those who need it, no questions asked. It’s a wonderful place for someone in need of some generosity and kindness. The center welcomes volunteers every day of the week and offers a variety of shifts to choose from. You can email volunteer@samcenter.org with any questions.
Big Brothers Big Sisters
If you’re looking for an opportunity to be super hands-on and see the impact you make firsthand, you should consider being a mentor to a child in the local community through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Onondaga County. PEACE, Inc. offers a variety of mentoring options, including site-based mentoring, workplace mentoring and school-based mentoring. Becoming a “Big” is a great way to foster change in your community; however, if you are unable to make the time commitment required of a Big, PEACE, Inc. also promotes other ways to volunteer on their website.
Earth Day Cleanup
The Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency (OCRRA) is providing a flexible and fun way to give back to the community through an Earth Day Cleanup— you can even pick what time you show up! Simply register online, grab a few friends and pick a safe area in Onondaga County that you’d like to clean up. Spending a day picking up litter may not sound like the most glamorous job, but it’s a wonderful way to get some sun and exercise. Help make Onondaga shine!
Chicktime Syracuse
Chicktime is an organization that connects women to creative and fun opportunities to pursue their passions while serving others, providing a place for mothers and daughters to serve and play together, and raising awareness for local women and children’s charities. The organization’s primary goal is to support those who may be victims of domestic violence and end cycles of abuse. Volunteering for Chicktime is easy and fun! Volunteers should RSVP online and think of a craft or activity they’d like to do with the group; it can be anything from cooking to nail painting! Once a month, volunteers go to the Chadwick Residence and complete their activity with the women and children living there. It’s a great way to have fun and share something you love with others all while making a direct impact.
Now that you’ve been introduced to some local volunteer opportunities, we hope you consider volunteering when you have some free time. No matter how you choose to serve the community, the most important thing is to give back!
