Meet Geena Rocero

Every year the LGBT Resource Center hosts Trans Week of Liberation (TWoL), a week-long event to affirm and celebrate trans communities and experiences. This year, Geena Rocero – a Filipina American trans advocate, activist, model and producer – will be delivering the commemorative keynote address on Thursday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m.

Not really sure who Geena Rocero is? Now worries! We’ve got the scoop.

She’s an inspiration.

Geena went viral in 2014 for coming out as transgender at the annual TED Conference. Her inspiring speech in honor of International Transgender Day of Visibility has since been viewed more than 4 million times and translated into 32 languages.

She means business.

Geena is the founder of Gender Proud, an award winning media production company. Gender Proud is a trans-focused and trans-specific production company telling stories on what it means to be trans and gender non-conforming. In 2016, Gender Proud received a GLAAD Media Award for “Beautiful As I Want to Be,” a series on LogoTV. In partnership with Fusion and Univision, “No League of Their Own,” a TV documentary about transgender athletes won the 2017 Association of LGBTQ Journalists Best in Health and Fitness Coverage award.

She serves some serious tea.

“I’m so sorry I can’t sell Fantasy. #TransIsBeautiful”

You might know Geena as the supermodel who clapped back at Victoria Secret regarding its chief marketing officer’s comments on excluding trans models from the VS runway.

She’s coming to campus.

In case you missed it, Geena is coming to campus to give the commemorative keynote address for Trans Week of Liberation. Don’t miss your chance to see her, Thursday, March 28 in 214 Slocum Hall. American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) will be available.
