Leadership is an essential skill, and at Syracuse University, February is a month filled with leadership opportunities! There are so many ways to get involved on campus and grow your leadership skills. Below is a list of a few opportunities this February to get you started.

Barnes Center at The Arch Peer Educator

Peer Educators promote healthy lifestyle choices and provide health and wellness education to their peers through various types of programming and outreach. This is a paid student employee position!

To apply, complete the Peer Educator Application Form and attend a recruitment event. The 2023-2024 Peer Educator Application deadline is Friday, Feb. 10, at 10 p.m. You can find more information about becoming a Peer Educator on the Peer Educator webpage.

Take Back the Night Planning Committee

Take Back the Night (TBTN) is an annual global event to raise awareness about sexual, relationship and domestic violence. This year, the University’s TBTN event will take place on March 29 at 7 p.m.; campus community members will gather at Hendricks Chapel to listen to keynote speakers, rally and march on campus.

The TBTN Planning Committee allows students to participate in planning the event. To become a committee member, a nomination form must be completed. This can be a self-nomination or a nomination by a fellow student, staff or faculty member. The nomination deadline is Friday, Feb. 10, and you can find more information about TBTN and the nomination on the University Events Calendar.

Orientation Leader

Orientation Leaders (OLs) are campus role models that help create a sense of belonging for incoming students. OLs lead both small and large events that support Syracuse Welcome and Winter Welcome as well as new student move-in.

As an orientation leader, you will have a chance to not only build your leadership skills, but also gain professional experience and strong connections with your peers, all while supporting the Orange community.

There are numerous opportunities to learn more about the responsibilities, time commitments and benefits of being an OL. Applications are due by Sunday, Feb. 12, at 11:59 p.m.

Living Learning Community Peer Mentor

Living Learning Community (LLC) Peer Mentors support incoming LLC residents through encouragement, leadership and academic support. This position takes place during the fall semester, and Peer Mentors are usually students who have previously lived in the LLC they now serve. For the Fall 2023 semester, nine LLCs will have Peer Mentors. You can apply to be a Peer Mentor on Handshake, and applications are due Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 11:59 p.m.

FYS 101 Peer Leader

First-Year Seminar (FYS) 101 is the semester-long one-credit course required for all first-year and transfer students. FYS 101 explores various topics and has students participate in experiential activities and small group discussions. The class is led by an instructor with assistance from a Peer Leader. Find out more about the duties of a Peer Leader and how to apply at the information session on Monday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m.
