Bea González is responsible for leading and advancing the University’s community investment effort by conceptualizing, creating, and implementing new strategies and partnerships to the benefit of the University and community stakeholders.
González has more than 38 years of experience in higher education; 30 of which have been in continuing education. She also has a long and distinguished record of public service. She joined University College of Syracuse University in 1984 as an academic advisor. She became executive director of the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program and community and public services in 1991. After serving as director and associate dean of Student Support Services, she was selected as interim dean in 2004 and Dean in 2007. In February 2015, she was appointed as Special Assistant to the Chancellor to focus on student affairs.
As Dean of University College, González supervised quality programming for continuing/part-time education, including credit and non-credit undergraduate and graduate studies, the English Language Institute, the Veterans Resource Center, and Summer@Syracuse programs.
As Special Assistant to the Chancellor, González focuses on student retention and success, strategic planning, day-to-day services, and policies and procedures focused on student learning, success, and support. She also worked closely with Chancellor Syverud in fall 2014 serving as his appointed liaison to students comprising THE General Body.
González has been elected to public office three times. In 2001, she became the first Latino/a to be elected president of the City of Syracuse Common Council and served two terms. She also served on the Syracuse City School District’s Board of Education.
