Learn about the safety escort program in this Q&A with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) Chief Bobby Maldonado.

Q: Is the safety escort program new?

A: No, we’ve had the program for many years but we revamped the program at the beginning of the Fall 2019 semester. In the past, we had different shuttles that covered different areas, which sometimes confused students. We now have two types of escorts: shuttle escorts and walking escorts.

Q: Who provides the escorts?

A: Security staff hired by DPS provides the walking escorts and they’ll be wearing a bright orange vest or jacket. When not providing an escort, they’ll be strategically located along Euclid Avenue, as well as Walnut Park and Marshall Street.

DPS Community Service Officers (CSOs) provide the shuttle escorts and they dress in the normal light blue CSO uniform and navy blue jacket.

Q: What time can I get an escort?

A: The walking escort program operates daily from 10:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. throughout the academic year. The shuttle escort service operates Sunday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., also throughout the academic year.

Q: How can I request an escort?

A: It’s easy, just call 315.443.7233 (SAFE).

For additional information about the program, visit the DPS website.
