Syracuse University, Department of Public Safety Officers Agree on New Contract through June 2021
Syracuse University and Council 82, the union representing the Department of Public Safety officers, have agreed to a new contract that will take effect beginning Dec. 23, 2017, and run through June 30, 2021. Union members ratified the contract on Dec. 14, 2017.
“Our Department of Public Safety staff, including our community and public safety officers play a critical role in ensuring a safe and secure campus community for our students, faculty and staff,” says Andrew R. Gordon, senior vice president and chief human resources officer. “Given that safety is our chief priority, it is important that we sustain a strong public safety force. We are grateful for and deeply value all members of the University’s dedicated staff—all of whom serve as the backbone of our great institution.”
The union includes 13 community service officers and 31 public safety officers (PSOs).
Effective July 1, 2018, the new contract will implement a market rate adjustment to PSO salaries. This adjustment seeks to promote retention and hiring of safety officers while reducing turnover.
The contract also includes 2 percent increases effective July 1, 2019, and July 2, 2020, and time off for union business and training for union leadership or their designees as the University continues to promote the importance of education and development for all its staff.
