Engineering Students Compete in Steel Bridge, Concrete Canoe Challenges at ASCE Regional Conference
Syracuse University hosted the 2017 Upstate New York Regional American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Conference from April 20-22. Students from Syracuse University, SUNY Polytech, Clarkson, University of Buffalo, RIT, RPI, Cornell, SUNY Canton, United States Military Academy at West Point and Hudson Valley Community College attended, along with three schools from Canada, École Polytechnique de Montréal, École de Technologie Supérieure and University of Waterloo.
Student teams competed in the Steel Bridge Competition, where they design a bridge and build it in the Carrier Dome under conditions set to mimic a river crossing. Concrete Canoe races were held at Jamesville Beach where a large crowd cheered on all of the teams.
École de Technologie Supérieure won first place in the overall weekend long competition. The University of Buffalo finished in second place and the United States Military Academy at West Point took third place.
Syracuse University students Rachel Murello ’18 and Will Guida ’18 served as co-chairs for the conference. Joshua Saxton ’17 is the ASCE Syracuse Chapter student president, and Professor Hossein Ataei is their faculty advisor.
