Message from Department of Public Safety Chief Bobby Maldonado
(The following message was sent to our campus community from DPS Chief Bobby Maldonado)
Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:
At about 2:30 this morning, a shooting occurred at the corner of Marshall St. and University Ave. None of the individuals involved is affiliated with Syracuse University.
Due to enhanced collaboration between the Syracuse Police Department (SPD) and the Department of Public Safety (DPS), increased patrol units were already in the area at the time of the incident and responded to the scene immediately. As a result of these increased patrols and the quick response time, there was no active threat to the campus community. A timely DPS public safety notice was issued to notify the campus community of the incident.
Because of unseasonably warm weather this weekend, we have added patrols on and around campus, including:
• The University Area Crime-control Team (UACT), staffed jointly by DPS and SPD, patrols in the immediate off-campus and fraternity/sorority neighborhoods focused on robbery and burglary suppression;
• The Neighborhood Safety Patrol (NSP), which patrols the neighborhoods bordering the eastern edge of our campus; and
• The Orange Watch, which provides an expanded DPS presence in key areas on North and South campuses and in the neighborhoods north and east of campus.
The safety of our students, faculty, staff and visitors is and will always be our top priority. As such, the Department of Public Safety has compiled a list of helpful safety strategies, which can be found here.
I recognize this morning’s event is unsettling. I want to remind you that a variety of counseling services are available to students, faculty and staff through our Counseling Center, Hendricks Chapel and the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program.
Additionally, I am always available to discuss your concerns and answer any questions you may have. Please feel free to contact me by phone at 315.443.2224 or via email at email@example.com.
