Two Professors Named to Provost’s Advisory Committee on Promotion and Tenure
Two members of the Syracuse University faculty have been selected to fill vacancies on the Provost’s Advisory Committee on Promotion and Tenure. Appointed by Provost Michele Wheatly to two-year terms were Gwendolyn Pough, professor in the Department of Women’s Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences, and Julie Hasenwinkel, associate dean and professor in the Department of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the Syracuse Biomaterials Institute.
The two were selected by the provost from a slate of nominees chosen by faculty during an online election last month. Pough was selected as a representative from the humanities and Hasenwinkel from the STEM disciplines.
The University-wide Advisory Committee, composed of seven senior faculty members, was created last year to assist the provost in promoting the highest academic standards across the University and to ensure consistency across the promotion and tenure processes. Four members of the original committee were appointed to two-year terms and three to an initial one-year term with the option of serving an additional two-year term.
Pough and Hasenwinkel’s appointments fill the vacancies left by two of the one-year term members who chose not to renew.
Chaired by Provost Wheatly, the committee serves an advisory role on promotion and tenure cases where there is substantive disagreement or where there is a strong possibility of a negative determination. Committee members represent five broad academic areas—humanities, social sciences, arts and design, STEM, and professional/applied areas—and are selected from the slate of candidates nominated by tenured and tenure-track faculty in their representative areas.
Interim Vice President for Research Peter Vanable also serves on the committee, and the group is convened by Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs LaVonda Nichelle Reed.
