Bhatia Appointed to National Engineering Committee
Shobha Bhatia, the Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professor in Civil & Environmental Engineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, has been appointed to the National Committee on Geological and Geotechnical Engineering. The nine-member committee reports to the Board of Earth Sciences and Resources of The National Academies of Science–Engineering–Medicine. As a member of this prestigious committee, she will work to:
- identify, investigate and report on questions relating to geological and geotechnical engineering to government, industry, academia and the public;
- provide scientific and technical information to inform public policy on geological and geotechnical engineering issues;
- identify new technologies and potential applications; and
- promote the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge.
The committee also serves as a central point for discussions among academic and professional groups, government agencies and industry to develop and sustain collaborations and exchanges of information. The scope of work for this committee includes earth processes and materials, including the mechanics of rock and soil, and safe and responsible human development, risk assessment and mitigation of natural and anthropogenic hazards.
