Campuswide Input Sought for New Signage and Promenade Furnishings
As the Campus Framework continues to take shape, the Office of Campus Planning, Design and Construction (CPDC) will host two more engagement sessions, designed to solicit feedback from the University community about campus restroom signage and University Place Promenade furnishings. Both events will be held on Friday, Oct. 14, in 101 Slocum Hall.
“We want honest feedback from the campus community,” says Joe Alfieri, director of CPDC. “There will be opportunities at both meetings, as well as web-based voting tools for students, faculty and staff to let us know what they think. Our goal is to take everyone’s ideas into consideration, so we can make our campus an even better place to live and work.”

The first event is from 1-2 p.m., and will address signage outside campus restrooms. Representatives from the Office of Residence Life and CPDC, with the support of Pentagram—an independent design consultancy hired by the University to evaluate campus signage—will be on hand to present a visual cross section of restroom signage used at universities across the country. Feedback received at this session will be used as a starting point for the team to develop conceptual designs. After a follow-up round of feedback, these conceptual designs will become design alternatives that can be voted on.
“Everyone’s input is critical, as we strive to create a more inclusive campus,” says Tiffany Gray, director of the LGBT Resource Center. “I urge as many people as possible to participate in the forum, and to provide honest, open communication. This will result in timely, relevant visual messaging that, in turn, demonstrates our continued commitment to diversity and inclusion.”
Based on feedback from the forum, Pentagram will design options that the University will share with students, faculty and staff. Everyone on campus will be invited to vote for their favorite design. The winning design will be installed throughout campus. Voting begins in November.
University Place Promenade Furnishings
Following the signage forum, participants are invited to remain for a discussion at 2 p.m. about furnishing options for the University Place Promenade. Representatives from Sasaki Associates, the Campus Framework’s design partner, will present alternative designs for the plaza site furnishings. Each of these design options will present distinctly different ideas of what a fully furnished space could look and feel like.
“We asked Sasaki to take a more holistic look at the plazas, and how they would fully fit out with site furnishings. They have responded with some great alternatives, with a focus on color, texture, form and accessibility of full space,” Alfieri says.
