Ponza Appointed Director of Environmental Health and Safety Services
Rebecca Ponza has been appointed director of Environmental Health and Safety Services (EHSS). Named interim director in July 2016, Ponza brings over 25 years of knowledge and experience in leading in environmental health and safety programs at Syracuse University, including over 15 years serving as the University’s assistant radiation officer.
“Becky Ponza’s appointment to the position of director of Environmental Health and Safety Services brings us both her incredible experience in promoting and protecting the environmental health of students, faculty and staff at Syracuse University, as well as her collaborative approach to achieving regulatory compliance in these areas,” says Tony Callisto, senior vice president for safety and chief law enforcement officer. “She has a reputation for serving the University community in a professional, systematic and caring way. Under Becky’s leadership, I am confident that EHSS will not only continue to provide exceptional service and foster safe working environments for all at the University, but also lead in promoting a culture of safety campuswide.”
As director of EHSS, she will lead and oversee the department’s administration and staff of environmental, health and safety professionals. She will also oversee the programs and services administered by the department, including programs related to environmental compliance, regulated waste management, occupational health and laboratory safety. She has also been appointed to serve as the University’s Radiation Safety Officer.
“I am grateful and excited to take on this new leadership opportunity,” says Ponza. “We have a great team at EHSS and I am thrilled to work with them to advance our programs and services in support of the University’s strategic plan and campus framework.”
Ponza holds a B.S. in nuclear medicine technology from SUNY Buffalo and has taken several graduate level courses in Syracuse University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science.
