Department of Public Safety Contracts with LiveSafe
The Department of Public Safety has contracted with LiveSafe, a mobile application that offers improved safety and communication abilities for smart phone users. The app will provide an additional outlet for connecting the University community with emergency services and safety-related information.
When downloaded on iOS and Android devices, LiveSafe provides a “mobile blue light” capability, allowing students to contact the Emergency Communications Center with the touch of a button and transmit their physical location during the call.
The app lets users discreetly report crime through a mobile interface that accepts tips on suspicious activity, mental health concerns and other potential safety issues. LiveSafe also provides a “SafeWalk” feature, a feature that lets users virtually share their location with friends through the app as they move toward a destination. SafeWalk also permits chatting with friends along the way to a destination.
Department of Public Safety Chief Bobby Maldonado says the app is a great way to stay connected with students, who are often very connected with their mobile devices.
The app is available to download for free on the iOS App Store and Google Play for Androids starting in August 2015. To get it, download “LiveSafe” from the app store, sign up with your University email address, and select Syracuse University to get started.
