Point of Contact to Release Special-Edition Poetry Broadside ‘Besos’
A special-edition poetry broadside from the published collection “El Beso” by Pedro Cuperman will be released, in English and Spanish, at the annual Point of Contact Patron Holiday Benefit on Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. This year’s event is a tribute to the Argentine poet Cuperman, who is Point of Contact’s founder and a Syracuse University Professor for almost 40 years.
The reception will take place at the Point of Contact Gallery, located in the ground floor of the Warehouse Bldg., in downtown Syracuse.
Cuperman is a professor in the Spanish program of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics. He is the author of several artist books, poetry collections and a novel. Among his works are “As Long as the Night Lasts” (2013), “El Beso” (2011) “Tango” (1991, 2007, 2013, co-authored with Nancy Graves), “Go East by Going West” (1990) and “American Baroque.”
Colombian violinist and Setnor School of Music alum Sara Silva will perform a repertoire of Latin American and holiday classics at this champagne and wine reception with hors d’ oeuvres and delicacies by Phoebe’s Restaurant. Guests will have an exclusive viewing of “Moments of Place,” an exhibition by New York City artist Gwenn Thomas, currently on view at Point of Contact Gallery.
There will also be a poetry reading in English and Spanish by Cuperman and Jules Gibbs, and guests will be able to have their copies of the book and the broadside signed by Cuperman. Guests can also purchase exclusive art pieces from a unique array of archival prints and Point of Contact books, and have them wrapped as a distinctive holiday gift.
All proceeds from the Patron’s Holiday Benefit will sponsor Point of Contact’s arts and literary programs, the preservation of the art collection and the publication of a collection catalogue in 2015, commemorating Point of Contact’s 40th Anniversary. Tickets are $75 each or $10 for students, and can be purchased securely online at http://puntopoint.org/events or at the door the night of the event.
