Symphony Syracuse and guest conductor Daniel Hege will be joined by the Syracuse University Oratorio Society with John Warren, director, for a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s monumental “Requiem” on Friday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m. in SU’s Goldstein Auditorium in the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center.
Tickets are $20 and available at the Syracuse Opera Box Office, 315-476-7372 or http://www.syracuseopera.com. Free parking is available in Booth Garage, University Avenue Garage, Waverly lot or Marion lot.
The performance will feature soloists Mihoko Kinoshita, soprano; Sarah Heltzel, mezzo-soprano; Jonathan Howell, tenor; and Marc Webster, bass. Kinoshita, Heltzel and Webster will also be appearing in Syracuse Opera’s production of “Madama Butterfly” April 20 and 22.
Verdi wrote “Messa da Requiem” (1874) in memory of the Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni, whom he admired greatly. This epic work draws upon the dramatic and expressive resources of a double choir, orchestra and four soloists to deliver a spiritual reading of the traditional Latin text of the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead.
