Drew Buske has been appointed deputy director of Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety (DPS), according to DPS Director and Chief Anthony Callisto.
As deputy chief, Buske will be second in command of DPS, the agency responsible for public safety, security and community policing on the 1,000-acre SU campus, a community of nearly 25,000 students, faculty and staff who work and study in nearly 350 buildings. Along with Callisto, Buske will directly supervise and direct senior command officers and managers who oversee 87 full-time and more than 300 part-time employees in DPS.
Callisto says that Buske was a natural choice for the position of deputy chief.”Drew has been a trusted and effective partner in providing leadership and stability to the department as the interim deputy director for the past year and a half,” says Callisto. “He is an outstanding campus law enforcement administrator and has demonstrated a commitment to community-oriented policing. He has an incredible depth of organizational knowledge, as well as a keen sense of the university community culture. Drew is respected by the officers and employees of DPS, recognized as a leader in the Syracuse University community, and valued as a colleague in the Central New York law enforcement community.”
Eleanor Ware, SU senior vice president for human services and government relations, says Buske’s vast knowledge and experience at SU make him well-suited for the position. “For several years, Drew has been a mainstay of DPS through a number of leadership transitions because of his deep experience and wisdom, as well as his dedication to both DPS and the people of the campus community,” she says. “With Drew’s appointment and the commitment and dedication of the chief and all of the officers and staff, DPS is poised to move to an even higher level of service to the campus community.”
Buske joined DPS in 1990 after a 21-year career with the Syracuse Police Department, where he served as a patrol officer and supervisor, criminal investigations detective, and crime prevention and community relations supervisor, among other responsibilities. Within DPS, Buske has served as a patrol sergeant and lieutenant, investigations lieutenant, and investigations and operations captain. He most recently has served as interim deputy chief, which he also did in 2001-02.
Buske attended Onondaga Community College and SU. He is a graduate of the Syracuse Police Academy, the Syracuse University/SPD Enhanced Authority Academy and the Syracuse Police Academy’s Campus Peace Officer Academy, and has completed training courses in campus law enforcement administration, law enforcement supervision, crime prevention, investigations, interview and interrogation techniques, and traffic science.
Buske received the 2006 Student Affairs Senior Vice President’s Award for Excellence in Collaboration and the 2006 International Scholars Award. He also holds numerous letters of commendation from DPS and SU.
He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the University Hill Public Safety Association and the Central New York Investigators Group.
