About 800 people attended President of Ireland Mary McAleese’s address Tuesday afternoon in Hendricks Chapel, the culminating event in the SU School of Education’s Centennial Year Celebration.
Many others followed her speech live on the Internet. A recorded webcast of the Hendricks Chapel event will be available Wednesday at http://soe100.syr.edu. Click on “Video Archive.” To see a slideshow of photos from her visit, click on “Photographs.”
Prior to her address, McAleese attended a luncheon with about 250 guests at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center, at which she received a joint city/county proclamation from Syracuse Mayor Matthew Driscoll and Onondaga County Executive Nicholas Pirro.
After lunch, she and her party walked to the Place of Remembrance, where she met School of Education Remembrance Scholars Danielle Gagnon, Emily McCaffrey and Malcolm Merriweather, and placed a bouquet of flowers at the base of the wall in honor of those who died in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.
McAleese concluded her campus visit with a tour of the SU College of Law’s Disability Rights Clinic in MacNaughton Hall and a sit-down discussion of Irish and American law practices with 75 SU law students and faculty, most of whom are involved in the college’s clinical programs.
