The Light Work gallery, located at 316 Waverly Ave., will feature the work of acclaimed photographer Toby Old in the exhibition, “Waterlog: The Beach Series,” Nov. 1-Dec.22. A reception will be held Nov. 3 at 6 p.m., in the Robert B. Menschel Media Center. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
The exhibition of black-and-white images illustrates Old’s ability to capture extraordinary moments in human action and social and cultural experiences as they unfold. The images were taken on beaches throughout the United States, including locations in California, New Jersey, New York, Minnesota and Hawaii, among others. Old captures animation in his photography, depicting both realistic and exciting observations of human life. His photographs are not the kind to be taken in quickly, but to be examined and scrutinized for details.
Drawing on the inspiration of photographers of the 1960s, Old has traveled the country photographing in many different environments, including street performances, beaches, fairs, fashion shows, nightclubs, boxing events, parks and Fourth of July celebrations. His “Times Squared” series has been exhibited internationally, including galleries in Tokyo and Philadelphia, and will soon be on view in Lisbon, Portugal. He participated in Light Work’s Artist-in-Residence program in 1980.
Gallery hours for “Waterlog” are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and by appointment. Light Work is a non-profit, artist-run organization dedicated to the support of artists working in photography and electronic media.
